Colour chart (27.3 x 97 cm)

I had made one of these colour charts before.
 
When I punch, I focus on the direction I punch to create unique hidden shapes that become visible when a light source hits the luminous thread. This technique can alter the way my chosen thread colour appears in the end. This used to frustrate me because I would choose a colour which would end up looking completely different once I started punching it. I would waste a lot of time trying numerous colours to get the right effect. 
 
I thought by creating a sample of each 500 colours that Dmc offers in their range of 6 stranded threads, I would have a quick reference before starting. That chart is one of my absolute favourite pieces I had done, you can see a picture here.
 
When I felt stuck again earlier this year, I decided to create another one as people loved the original chart so much but it wasn’t for sale. I love how this chart turned out but it was a looooooot of work. It required an infinite patience as it’s a lot of repetition needed to complete it. It wasn’t until I had done nearly half of the chart that I could get some sort of joy out of it but then each addition of colour would barely make a dent in it. It was a labour of love, for sure.
 
It begs the question, why do I make things so hard for myself? I started off with creating tiny punch pieces and overtime made them bigger and bigger. Turns out, I hold a belief that in order for something to be valuable, it needs to be complicated and require a lot of hard work. So I am now learning to lean into the joy of creating something, rather than the effort so I am more intentional with my time and energy.
